The first day of the New Horizons International Film Festival is behind us. On Thursday, the audience saw the film “Messidor” during the opening of the retrospective.
The retrospective of Alain Tanner's films is the result of cooperation between the Ministry of Development Funds and Regional Policy and the New Horizons Festival. Through the presence of the works of this Swiss director at the festival, the Ministry of Development Funds and Regional Policy is promoting the new edition of the Swiss-Polish Cooperation Program, or so-called Swiss Funds.
On the first day of the festival, the audience watched “Messidor,” which is, as Malgorzata Sadowska writes on the festival's website, “a forgotten masterpiece driven by the energy of youth revolt, drawing on the discoveries of second-wave feminism and dissecting the myths of road cinema.”
Participants of the festival can see 8 films by the Swiss director. These will be feature films and documentaries:
- Messidor / Alain Tanner / Switzerland, France 1979 / 123',
- A city of Chandigarh / Alain Tanner / Switzerland 1966 / 55',
- Charles, dead or alive / Alain Tanner / Switzerland 1969 / 94',
- Salamander / Alain Tanner / Switzerland 1971 / 124',
- Return from Africa / Alain Tanner / Switzerland 1973 / 113',
- Middle of the World / Alain Tanner / Switzerland 1974 / 111',
- Jonah Who Will Be 25 in the Year 2000 / Alain Tanner / Switzerland 1976 / 111',
- In the white city / Alain Tanner / Switzerland, Portugal 1983 / 108'.
The opening of the retrospective was attended by the Undersecretary of State, Konrad Wojnarowski, who supervises the investment of Swiss Funds in the ministry.
"We assumed that cinema through its universal language, the language of culture, would be a good way for Poles and Swiss to get to know each other. The choice of artist and films is not accidental. Alain Tanner is an outstanding director, co-founder of the Swiss New Wave, reformer of Swiss cinematography. And yet he is not well known in Poland. - Said Undersecretary of State Konrad Wojnarowski before the screening of “Messidor”."
The Swiss-Polish Cooperation Program is a program that shares the funds that Switzerland has allocated for the development of our country. Currently we have the second edition of Swiss Funds for Poland. Switzerland has allocated 320.1 million to our country for urban development and scientific research and innovation. The implementation of the second edition of the Swiss-Polish Cooperation Program will end in December 2029.
The festival takes place stationary from July 20 to 30, online - from July 18 to July 28, 2024 in Wroclaw. Selected films can be viewed online from July 18 to August 4.
